Influence of postpartum cloprostenol injection on sow and litter performance

چکیده
nything that compromises sow milk yield would be expected to have a negative impact on piglet performance. Periparturient hypogalactia syndrome has been associated with endometritis.1 Most sow herds have some incidence of endometritis, with reported incidences ranging from 1.1%–37.2% for different herds.2 Recent interest has focused on the postpartum administration of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) or its analogs, which have been reported to reduce the incidence of vulval discharge and improve piglet weight gains (Pascual; Proc 12th IPVS Cong, 1992;2:495).3 It is possible that these two effects are causally related, and that PGF2α facilitates the evacuation of uterine debris postpartum, reducing the incidence of endometritis and allowing the sow to express her milk yield potential. Additionally, by facilitating uterine cleansing, administering PGF2α could improve postweaning fertility (Pascual; Proc 12th IPVS Cong,1992;2:495. Sanmartin; Proc 12th IPVS Cong, 1992;2:497).

The Effect of Dose and Route of Administration of D-cloprostenol and Cloprostenol on the Parturient Response of Sows
The aim of the present study was to further examine the efficacy of different doses and routes of D-cloprostenol and cloprostenol administration on the parturition response in sows. Ninety crossbred multiparous sows (Landrace x Yorkshire) with an average parity number of 4.3 ± 2.4 were allocated to induce farrowing by one of the following treatments: Gr. 1 (control, n=10) injection with normal ...
متن کاملImpact of sow and litter characteristics on colostrum yield, time for onset of lactation, and milk yield of sows.
The aim of the present study was to estimate the concurrent impact of sow and litter characteristics on sow productivity. Sow productivity was defined as colostrum yield (CY), onset of lactation (the time point when milk secretion increased steeply, approximately 31 h postpartum), transition milk yield (MY; 36-60 h postpartum), and the mean MY in wk 1 to 4 of lactation. Therefore, the study inv...
متن کاملEffects of dietary vitamin E on sow reproductive performance over a five-parity period.
A study involving 360 farrowings over a five-parity period evaluated the effects of dietary vitamin E on sow reproductive performance and the subsequent effects on serum, colostrum, and milk tocopherol contents. The 2 x 3 split-split-plot experiment was conducted at two locations that differed in the type of facility (indoor gestation pens/farrowing crates [IP/FC] or outside gestation lots/indo...
متن کاملFender design and insulation of farrowing huts: effects on performance of outdoor sows and piglets.
Two studies assessed sow and litter performance when design features of farrowing huts varied. A fender is a structure that extends out the front of the hut to create a veranda that prevents young piglets from leaving. In Exp. 1, 206 lactating sows and their litters were used to assess litter performance and the time required to process litters for two fender designs (short wooden [WS] vs. tall...
متن کاملModeling the Costs of Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome and Locomotory Disorders on Sow Productivity and Replacement
Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS) and locomotory disorders are common health problems in sows. Previous research suggests that they can cause substantial losses, reduce sow welfare, and result in premature removal of the sow from the herd. However, economic consequences of PPDS and locomotory disorders have not been investigated thoroughly. The goal of this study was to examine economic lo...
